Tips to remember if you think you’re dealing with a social networking chat scam:

Use the smell test. If something seems fishy, it probably is
Beware of people using the “but we’re friends” angle and the sense of urgency they will try to instill
Do simple research before you act. Call your friend to verify their story
Ask the scammer questions only your friend would know
